The second movie takes place after the series (and may or may not be important to the new series). The first movie takes place between seasons five and six is and important. Ones with ** are the best episodes of the series, but not part of the mythology. Ones with a * are not essential mythology episodes, but connect to the mythology. So for those wanting to rewatch the show but not sift through the entire series, these are the essential episodes of The X-Files. It's a long series with a complicated plot, and only some of the episodes are about that plot.

With The X-Files coming back to TV in the not-too-distant future, I figure people are going to start watching the series to catch up. These are not the best episodes, but the ones most important for catching up with the X-Files mythology. In 2014, Carter stated on a Reddit AMA that Scully is, in fact, immortal.I wrote this awhile back when the revival was first announced.
There are countless references to Scully’s immortality in the show, but none make the case better than the words of The X-Files’ creator, Chris Carter. This is the first time that we can see that Mulder and Scully had sex, but later in ninth season, a supersoldier tells Scully some personal details of her, like “on one lonely night you invited Mulder to your bed”. Over the course of season eleven, Scully and Mulder search for William. At the end of the Season, Scully gets a vision, that at the beginning of season eleven is revealed to have come from her son, William. In the tenth season it is revealed that Scully and Mulder are no longer a couple, as she chose to leave him. Mulder’s lengthy search for his sister in the first seven seasons of The X-Files was not in vain because, at the end of the day, he found peace with the help of the Walk-ins. In season 7, episode 11, “Closure”, Mulder finally accepts that his sister is gone and they’re both free.
In the film, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, which takes place six years later, Mulder and Scully are still in a relationship. He was long thought, for 17 years, to be the biological child of Fox Mulder. Jackson Van De Kamp was born William Scully III the son of Dana Scully.
